Hi!

I still cannot believe this but some people who used to live on our street left
their dog behind. They moved out about two weeks ago and left tons of thrash on
the curb plus their dog. She is a sweet , very pretty (reddish brown color with
white head in reddish brown spots and white paws), 8-9 month old pit. We really
would like to find her a new home. She seems to be scared of people and very
confused but has been warming up in the last two days. She is really good with
other dogs as she loves playing with Sonic (our dog). I was trying to take a
picture of her this morning but she just couldn't sit still.
I am sure that she would make a great pet so please let me know if anybody is
interested in taking her in. Please ask your friends and family!!! I really do
not want to turn her into a shelter and her chances of survival are really low
then!!!!

Thanks for your help,

Hey I found a little black dog--about my dog's size--in my backyard. He's not neutered and keeping trying to make "time" with my spayed girl dog. Anyone know whose dog it is? He's come around all day today.

Let me know. He won't come close to me enough to grab him, but he sure likes Kola! She keeps nipping at him--she isn't that sort of girl!http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs001.ash2/33408_725697045367_22623248_39486994_8302336_n.jpg

Thanks Vonda for posting the previous info about our upcoming Centennial Celebration!

West End people, your neighboring-hood hopes to see you out and about this weekend! Event info is below...

--------

Westview is excited to be celebrating our centennial on Saturday, June 26th! 100 years ago William J. Davis purchased the Westwood Park property from the Ontario Land Company for $100,000. He renamed the property "West End Park", and hired Solon Zachery Ruff, the civil engineer and landscape expert responsible for Ansley Park, to lay out the plans for his new residence park neighborhood. (Read more about Westview's history...)

Today Westview is a vibrant (and affordable) intown Atlanta neighborhood! Come spend a day with us and get to know one of Atlanta's last hidden gems.

Information about the day's events:

You can go ahead and reserve your "passport" via PayPal at www.westviewatlanta.com/centennial and pick it up at will-call on the day of the event. (This is an ideal solution for BeltLine 5k runners/walkers who don't want to carry cash!)

Art/Vendors
Between eating and dancing browse our artist/vendor market!

Atlanta Printmakers Studio (APS) was founded in 2005 to promote the fine art of printmaking by offering access to a well-equipped studio and diverse educational programs that foster the development of printmaking as a vibrant and progressive art form. Games
There will be fun games (with prizes) for the kids on the lawn! Then let your children be awed by Akbar Imhotep and Peter Hart:

Storyteller/Puppeteer
As part of Art on the BeltLine Akbar Imhotep, The Story Messenger, will be performing. Akbar has worked with Vagabond Marionettes and was a puppeteer for four years at the Center for Puppetry Arts before being inspired to storytell without puppets by the Xperimental Puppet Theatre. Since then he has been traveling the Southeast with his suitcase filled with puppets and props. Read more about Akbar Imhotep at www.akbarstories.com.

Marionette Puppet Show
Peter Hart will be performing short variety marionette puppet shows throughout the day. His shows are very popular and have been seen at the Atlanta Dogwood Festival, Conyers Cherry Blossom Festival, Smyrna Jonquil Fesitival, and other family events throughout the South. The shows will be free admission and presented in "street performer" style with a "Tip Hat" available for gratuities.
Hi neighbors,

The Westview Centennial Celebration is just three weeks away! This year we are doing a lot more activities to celebrate our 100 year anniversary as a neighborhood! We are partnering with the Beltline to have a 5K run/walk in the morning, we will have a ceremony where neighbors will speak about the neighborhood, a "grill-off" featuring local businesses and neighbors, and three phenomenal house DJs spinning the entire afternoon including our own neighbor Drew of Drew's house. The entire day will take place at KIPP STRIVE Academy located on Lucile Avenue.

Don't you LOVE living in this neighborhood!

But to make this happen, we need YOU! Every year neighbors pitch in to make the cookout a success, and this year is no different.

So, how can you help? In three ways:

1) Donate money or items! No amount of $$ is too small. Having monetary donations will allow us to buy the items we need. If not, please see the list below and decide what you can bring. Please contact Scott at scottsingsbari@aol.com if you want to drop of items.

Cash Donations (checks can be made out to "Westivew Community Organization") or donate through paypal on the neighborhood website: http://www.westviewatlanta.com/
Hot Dogs
Chips
Bottled Water
Cans of soda
wash tubs (temporary, to fill up with ice)
2) Help with planning! As you can imagine, it takes a lot of work to make this happen. If planning something like this is your thing we need your help! If you are interested in helping here please shoot me an email: agabriel1908@yahoo.com.

3) Spread the word! Let your neighbors know about the event, and encourage them to come out. Feel free to print the attached flier.

Thanks for all your efforts!

I heard about West Fest on 90.1 WABE (National Public Radio) too. They were talking about things to do in Atlanta this weekend with Lois Reitzes and West Fest was one of three events mentioned.

Couldn't have picked a better weekend to have this on. Saturday's high is going to be 77 degrees! This is not only going to be great for West End residents, but hopefully the businesses too with the festival crowd.

I have to say, I am a little bit upset about this. I told APD about this place by in November. I dont know what they did but it was quiet until about month ago, when John and Robert noticed activity. I emailed the major he got someone right on it. But they said they only saw people shooting a video. So they did nothing. They kept it on the radar and was planning a bust this weekend but the shooting came first. Bumper more bad press.

John Pavlin and I will be roaming the neighborhood with a van and trailer, collecting tires for Cleta's Tire Round-Up, starting at 9 AM. Afterward, I'll head over to Rose Circle and help plant trees. If anyone has tires around their yard or perhaps in a vacant house nearby, please move them to the sidewalk and post a reply here with the address, and we'll get them. Better yet, show up and help us sling tires. Many hands make for faster work! If we get a few replies, I'll buy a bunch of hot Krispy Kremes and we'll trade you a fresh doughnut for and old tire.

Folks, the Decatur Old House Fair (http://www.decaturoldhousefair.com/) is coming up on March 6th. Last year it was a lot of fun, plus admission is only $10.

Last year's fair gave me a ton of ideas and saved me a lot of money on the Wren's Nest restoration project. I learned about working with contractors, historic landscapes, window repair, and on and on.

In short -- definitely recommend you check it out if you've got an old house.

West Enders! Looking for flexible childcare in your home or an occasional sitter for a night out? I am an experienced nanny and daycare worker, and former West End resident looking for additional opportunities in Atlanta. I work primarily with toddlers and infants, but I'm open to any age. Currently I am working 8 - 16 hours/week with two Morningside families with a 5 month old, an 8 month old and a 2 1/2 year old.

I enjoy facilitating learning and exploration by young children. I rise to the challenge of meeting children where they are and constructively redirecting inappropriate behavior. I try to respectfully communicate with children as thoughtful, capable individuals- carefully explaining reasons for things. I have excellent references both in Atlanta and from my recent experiences doing childcare for a wonderful high energy toddler on whose parent's organic farm I was apprenticing, as well as a progressive daycare in small town Ohio where I went to school. I'd be happy to discuss in detail the rest of my experience working with children. I'd love to hear about your children and what kind of childcare you're looking for.

Hi Guys:

Just found out that a neighbor was robbed at gunpoint last night around 10pm. This happened at the corner of Greenwich and Hopkins Street. The victim owns a Escalade and told my neighbor (who told me) that the two thieves approached him on foot. My neighbor was unable to give a description of the two but he made a reference to the guys in the house near the corner of Oak & Hopkins St. It’s the holidays be careful!

We had our second tour of homes and festival meeting yesterday. We have really good ideas

like a porch nite and a dog parade.

We still need volunteers to head the following committee:

1) Finance committee - this person will send out invoices to sponsors, make sure the amount is collected and oversee expenses.

We need volunteers for all committees

1) Volunteer committee. These people on this committee will set up the concert, sit in homes during tour, collect money at booths, work the festival and parade. To be a part of this committee email Jeriynl@bellsouth.net

2) Entertainment committee These people will select the entertainment for concert and festival To be a part of this committee email rlthomp2002@yahoo.com

3) Sponsorship committee these people will call on business entities to donate money to tour email Vkhenry@bellsouth.net to be on this committee.

4) Grant writing. self explanatory.

I am absolutely sure I am missing a committee but tell me what you want to do and I will place you somewhere.

If you want to help in the planning process, you can do that as well or maybe you just want to suggest a company to solicit donations. Just let me know.

Last Tuesday during the rain, a tree fell and hit their house/power line. I called Ga Power and they confirmed that no one is supposed to be in that house and that there is no service at that address. I told them that they have light, Ga Power said they will be out to cut their power at the street.

Maestro left description of his band on my hd:

K.C. Maestro is the world's first Vocalinist, a term he coined a few years ago to describe a person who sings and plays violin both alternately, and in combination, with new methods of playing. Neo-classical fusion is the genre of music he created, which encompasses elements of blues, jazz, Latin music, and soul music, heavily laden with classical themes, and usually with the driving rhythms of hip-hop. Realizing that he needed a group to fully express his new music, Maestro created his first segment of a three-part mega-band, Vivaldi Staccato, in January of 2008. The band consists of violins, voices, ethnic and set drums, a bass, and a saxophone. Uniquely, most of the musicians in the band are multi-instrumented, and this is incorporated into shows as we see the band switch instruments amongst themselves mid-song, often coinciding with transitions in the music. Maestro believes that music comes from the body of the people assembled, not just the band. It is this principle, combined with the band, that makes Vivaldi Staccato a new, but ever expanding phenomenon.

An apartment was burglarized on saturday the 14th of november. The couple left the place and the neighbor heard a young lady/girl knock on the apartment of the victim and the neighbors door. She asked for someone that never lived in the building. About 20 minutes later the neighbor heard some noise in the stairwell and thought it was a tenent that was going upstairs. Low and behold that was the low lives breaking into the door with a crowbar and stealing a flat screen and computer. The property is at the corner of Queen and Oglethorpe. If anyone saw anything please contact police or me at 404 456 4118.
Be on the look out for a champagne crown vic or mercury grand marquis. The vehicle was seen at the scene of another burglary on Lucille in the westview community. There is a car that I know of that is on lucille ave that I believe is the vehicle. I have more info as to why I know that it is the car.
Always call the cops if someone comes to you home and asks for someone that doesn't live there and if someone is cutting through backs of houses or side yards. This is how these parasites operate. This is how they can see if you have flatscreens and computers also. Always call and always get license plate numbers of suspicious cars. The holidays are comming and when you shop at the mall they will be looking to shop in own homes.

The cat was there in the morning, but when I went to check on her about 10am she was gone. Haven't seen her since. At least she got a dry porch and a good meal out of the ordeal. I'm hoping she is at home now since I haven't seen her again. Thanks for the Humane Society info. Might need to do that next time.

He hopes to have a chat with parents/future parents/concerned citizens about the future of our local schools with the hopes that we can work together to help things improve. He is also up for re-election, so this is a good chance to voice your concerns and ask questions. Children are welcome - they can play in my son's room - and food will be provided. He's also bringing reading kits.

Hi all,
About two weeks ago, a group of people moved into a rental house at 1152 Eggleston Street. It was clear right away that they weren't related and a few neighbors called Vonda about it possibly being a rooming house. Vonda contacted code enforcement who visited a few times but has failed to cite them. A few more neighbors went over there, including our own code enforcement committee head Arvis (spelling correct?)to talk to them. It is a group of homeless veterans with mental health and substance abuse problems that were put there by a new (founded in 2008) "nonprofit" Veterans Empowerment Organization of Georgia (http://www.veteransempowerment.org). When I talked to the man, Franz Fortune who runs the operation, he told me that the men need an address to collect veterans benefits and that they can't do that if homeless. He also said their various mental and substance abuse problems made them like "sheep".
For the past two weeks there have been minor disturbances at the house, people yelling on the porch either late at night or predawn, people walking up and down the street lost looking and many random people going in and out of the house and we have tried to convince them that this was not the place for them, to no avail.
Friday, October 9 at about 4:30 in the afternoon, I heard a man screaming outside. I went out to check, as did a few other neightbors. One of the 1152 residents was on the curb, screaming and weeping that another man inside the house had attacked him with a saw and that he was scared and he needed us to call the police. He was bleeding. I did and three police cars and an ambulance showed up. The culprit? The alcoholic housefather that was in charge of the men. He was arrested. I spoke with VEO again and pointed out that despite their assurances that there wouldn't be any problems they was indeed a very large problem. They don't plan on moving.
We need support!!! A phone call to Franz Fortune (678-663-9349) and Darnell Cross (678-499-5689) letting them know that saw this mess doesn't work in West End would be much appreciated. Be aware: both men will try to glorify their mission and make you seem like you are a baaaaaaad person for not wanting to "help" veterans. I told them that I love dogs but I don't want an animal shelter next door and I like kids but I don't want to live next to a day care center (especially if the dogs or kids are swinging saws!!!)
Thanks!!!

Greetings Neighbors!

I hope this finds you all well. It's that time again! :))
I look forward to seeing you all, as well as any new neighbors you will bring to our meeting tomorrow (September 9th at 7PM. 1191 Donnelly Ave 30310, Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club behind Krogers).
I'm sure you've been out recruiting, because I know this is the way of the informed connected community I live in.

Attached is the Sept. Agenda for tomorrow, Bylaws, and two Ordinances. I do have the bylaws in a Word doc format if you can not open a PDF file. (Thank you Scott)
Print, review and bring them with you. There will be limited copies available, mostly for seniors and those without a computer.

We have much to discuss. Many neighborhood and city updates, and we vote on Bylaws.Be prepared to start and end on time.

Tuesday, September 15th is BeltLine Night at the Braves Game versus the Mets at Turner Field. Thanks to the generosity of Turner Broadcasting, I will have tickets to give out.Woo-hoo!!! Yes- each of you will obtain a ticket and I will give many to NPUT associations to distribute within their communities.

On another note....

Neighbors, these past few weeks have been very hard. As we work to ensure our Bylaws are up to date, restructure our committees and prepare for Mayoral forums- we had a tragedy. Many of you have heard of the heart breaking death of one of our Spelman students.
The news had left me speechless, and frankly....feeling a bit defeated. However, I was encouraged and reminded by Graham Jackson- "This is a call for ACTION"...

Please work and pray with me (and our leadership team) as we work to redevelop and implement Public Safety plans.
As we rebuild our Public Safety team within NPU-T, I am asking each of the neighborhoods to identify at least 1 representative to join this team. Please note, while I highly encourage you to be apart of the neighborhood association in which you reside, you do not have to belong to one in order to serve within NPU-T.

Community, be encouraged! Know that we are working to help deter and prevent crime. We NEED your support to make each of our neighborhoods safer. Attend our meetings, provide positive input and most importantly, serve within our communities!

See you tomorrow :) and invite a friend to come out and get their Braves tickets!

Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!

Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.

The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.

The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.

The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.

I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand.

He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.

Yup, he was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.
Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border. He's kind of a 'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff.

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO

HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF

AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona ) who created the ' Tent City Jail':
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights Cut off all but 'G' movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then He Started Chain Gangs For Women So He Wouldn't Get
Sued For Discrimination.

He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order that Required Cable TV For Jails So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel.

When asked why the weather channel He Replied, So They Will Know How Hot It's Gonna Be While They Are Working
ON My Chain Gangs.

He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton......If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back.'

More On The Arizona Sheriff:

With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix (116 Degrees Just Set A New Record), the Associated Press Reports:
About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their Government-Issued
Pink Boxer Shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached
138 Degrees Inside The Week Before.

Many Were Also Swathed In Wet, Pink Towels As Sweat Collected On Their Chests And Dripped Down To Their PINK SOCKS.

'It Feels Like We Are In A Furnace,' Said James Zanzot, An Inmate Who Has Lived In The TENTS for 1 year. 'It's Inhumane.'

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 Degrees In Iraq And Our Soldiers Are Living In Tents Too, And They Have To Wear Full Battle Gear,
But They Didn't Commit Any Crimes,So Shut Your Mouths!'

Way To Go, Sheriff!

Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

Subject: Dog Tethering Prohibited starting 9/4 - by: cubana

Dog owners must find alternative means of confining pets

Residents who chain or tether dogs to fixed objects while they are unattended must find an alternative means of restraining their pets beginning September 4, 2009. In March, the Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to ban the practice of chaining or tethering dogs. District 2, At-Large Commissioner Robb Pitts sponsored the resolution.

The introduction of the amendment attracted dozens of animal advocates who supported the ban. According to the Humane Society, “A dog kept chained in one spot for hours, days, months or even years suffers immense psychological damage. An otherwise friendly and docile dog, when kept continuously chained, becomes neurotic unhappy, anxious and often aggressive.”

Additionally, the Humane Society warns that tethering is dangerous to dogs because they become targets for other animals, humans and biting insects. Tethers can become entangled with other objects, which can choke or strangle dogs. Tethers can also cause dogs necks to become raw and covered with sores because of poorly fitted collars along with the animal straining against the collar in constant attempts to escape Collars can also become embedded in a dog’s neck without proper care and fitting.

Under the amended ordinance, dogs cannot be tethered to a fixed object unless held by an attendant or by the owner.

Options for properly restraining dogs include dog runs, mesh fencing and chain link fences. Chain link fences are stronger and more durable; however, residents of cities and unincorporated areas within Fulton are urged to check with their local governments for any required fencing permits and homeowners associations to determine the appropriate types of fencing before purchasing fencing or fence construction supplies.

For additional suggestions or supplies, owners should visit their local hardware or home improvement stores. Additionally, Barking Hound Village , the County’s Animal Services provider, has instructions for constructing appropriate fencing. Call 404-794-0358 or visit www.bhvf.org.

For more information on the dog-tethering ban in Fulton County , contact the Department of Environment and Community Development’s Code Enforcement Division at 404-612-2723.
