Two words "Dirt Mall". Seriously with all the great shopping in Atlanta theres no reason to ever set foot in this place scary place. Its basically a flea market with a roof, many of the shops sell bootleg items and Im amazed the police havent raided this place yet. Oh, and to add to the fun two people were shot there last night!

Nothing spectacular, maybe next year: Definiately nothing special. Mostly over priced. It does have a nice selection of African American shops if you're interested in that sort of thing. Outside of that few redeeming factors. Very few. It looks like they're buildig up though some new drug stores and the new food service area will help but aside from those it's just another 'mall' in the neck of the 'hood'. Unless you live there you don't even know where West End is located.

I would love to learn how to sew. Michael's mom was in town this past weekend a helped me sew a table runner. It turned out pretty well. What I really need to learn how to do is alterations. all of my clothing needs to be altered and it gets to be pretty pricey. I would love to be able to do it all myself. On that note I bought a dress today and need it hemmed for a wedding this Saturday. Since I have yet to learn how, does anyone know someone who does alterations close by? The place I've been going to is in Buckhead which is a pain, they charge an arm and a leg, and have a minimum 1 week turn around time. Someone please help quick. email me rachaelfjoseph@gmail.com if you any suggestions.

I am so sorry this happened to you! Two weeks to the day after we were broken into, four guys showed up on our driveway. They looked to be 18 to early 20s and they were gesturing towards our house and towards some other homes on our street. Initially, two guys walked onto my driveway and were talking for 5 minutes, then two other guys showed up. They started showing off their "bling" to each other and then walked a little further onto our property. I called the cops, but they didn't make it in time. I really felt like they were returning to the scene of the crime to see if we had replaced the items they had stolen. (Pure speculation of course.)

I do believe that whomever it was that broke into our home had been watching our house; they broke in 10 minutes after I left for class that day. Its a creepy feeling, but it has taught Kevin and I to shake up our routine so we aren't so easily predictable.

Again, I'm sorry you were broken into.

I hate to contradict:( you but per Webster he is a felon.
A felon : one who has committed a felony. He was seen doing it so therefore he is a felon, per Webster that is.
What he is not is a convicted felon. :-O

On Thursday December 4, 2008, Jacorey Johnson appeared at the Fulton County Jail to enter a plea on his March 13, 2008 Burglary in Oakland City, his October 2008 Theft by Receiving Stolen Auto and his November 2008 Theft by Receiving Stolen Auto. The defendant entered a non negotiated guilty plea. Zone 4 Community Prosecutor Blackett Jones asked the judge to sentence Johnson to 20 years to serve 5 in jail and the balance spent on probation with the special condition that the defendant be banished from Zone 4. That probation would be suspended if the defendant successfully completes 5 years on probation. Johnson asked the judge to sentence him to 6 months in jail. The judge sentenced the defendant to 20 years to serve 2 years with the balance on probation. The sentence was 20 years because the defendant is a repeat offender and the court is required to sentence the defendant to the maximum sentence allowed under the law. Johnson will be eligible for parole in approximately 6 months. He is banished from Zone 4 and the community will receive banishment notices from the Community Prosecutor.

LEARN TO CLEAR KUDZU ORGANICALLY
at the
CVC URBAN FARM

This Sunday, December 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. we will begin clearing kudzu from the bottomlands of the CVC Urban Farm at 779 Atwood Street (30310) (PAOCC Site). The farm's bottomlands have been identified by Organic Farmer Rashid Nuri of Truly Living Well Farms as soil of extraordinarily good tilth and high fertility, and expansion into this area is expected to double the farm's production in 2009. We hope you will join us as we move forward with this exciting development at the farm, and at the same time, learn to clear Kudzu organically as you would want to in your own backyard.

This opportunity to learn while providing service to our community is an educational project of the NPU-T Horticultural Education/Urban Agriculture Committee. Debbie Zimmerman, Co-Founder of the Rose Circle Community Garden, will instruct newbie kudzu-clearers on safe, organic, and complete methods of kudzu removal.

Volunteers should bring tools if they have them, such as a shovel (Short, with a D-Handle, is highly recommended, but any garden shovel will work); garden clippers, garden loppers, and garden gloves. Wear sturdy boots and expect them to get muddy.

Water and granola bars will be provided.

For more information, please email Stephanie Radbill, CVC Urban Farm Manager at stephanie.radbill@gmail.com or call Stephanie at 770-401-2992

We Hope to See you at the Farm on Sunday!

Please come to this event! We will be very appreciative of any time you can offer us. Thanks,
Stephanie

Neighbor and fellow gardener Kim Bogard found this easy to read article about Urban Agriculture that explains how growing our own food in and near our cities can offer solutions to many urban problems ranging from vacant and blighted lots to an insecure food supply in these times of economic crisis. For those who are searching for something positive to do, instead of just reacting to crisis or complaining about our victimization, urban agriculture offers much hope.

Thanks, Kim, for sharing this great link:

Rameau is an activist who has been executing a bailout plan of his own around Miami's empty streets: He is helping homeless people illegally move into foreclosed homes.

With the housing market collapsing, squatting in foreclosed homes is believed to be on the rise around the country. But squatters usually move in on their own, at night, when no one is watching. Rarely is the phenomenon as organized as Rameau's effort to "liberate" foreclosed homes.

Like other cities, Miami is trying to ease the problem. Officials launched a foreclosure-prevention program to help homeowners who have fallen behind on their mortgage, with loans of up to $7,500 per household.

The city also recently passed an ordinance requiring owners of abandoned homes — whether an individual or bank — to register those properties with the city so police can better monitor them.

On Tuesday, November 25, 2008, a CourtWatch was held on Defendant Marcus Drake aka Albert Roland. The Defendant is a known drug dealer in the Adair Park community located in Zone 3. He has 3 prior Possession of Cocaine With Intent To Distribute convictions in Fulton County Superior Court since 1999. In the instant case, Marcus Drake was charged with Possession of Cocaine and Abandonment of Controlled Substance when he was arrested on March 7, 2007 on Allene Avenue. An Atlanta Police officer observed the Defendant standing outside in the area and, when the officer approached him, the Defendant dropped one hit of crack cocaine onto the ground.

The Defendant entered a non-negotiated plea after rejecting the State’s offer of 10 years to serve in prison. The Honorable Judge Johnson sentenced the Defendant to 30 years to serve 10 years in prison, with the 20 year balance to serve on probation. Because the District Attorney’s Office filed the requisite paperwork showing that the Defendant was a recidivist or repeat offender, THE DEFENDANT MUST SERVE EVERY DAY OF HIS 10 YEAR SENTENCE IN PRISON WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE.

Major Finley of Zone 3 sent representatives from the Atlanta Police Department to attend this CourtWatch. There was a representative from Councilwoman Cleta Winslow’s office as well as members of the Adair Park community. Because of this support, this case was successfully resolved and this drug dealer is now off the streets.

Thanks to all who participated and for your attention to this case!

Tonight, day before Thanksgiving, did anyone see two guys, one in black and one in brown clothing walking with a girl over 16. They walked from Lee and RDA to Matthews and azalia. This is very important. The girl meet these guys at a chinese restaurant on RDA. This would have been around 5 or 5:30.
Be careful when you walk around. A neighbor was almost robbed last Thursday at about 11pm. He was walking down Oglethorpe and a young girl in a small silver car asked him for directions. After telling her directions she punched in some numbers into her phone and next thing he knows he has a guy in a dark hoody running toward him telling him to "give it Up". He took off running and escaped but as he was running away he saw that girl drive past him again. He thinks that they were related but he could be wrong.
I heard that December 11th is when the state furloughs many inmates from the prisons. That makes so much sense. Let these people out so that they commit more crimes so they can get presents for their loved ones. Not all will do this but the statistics show that 60 or 70 will reenter the criminal justice system again. That is my rant , I welcome yours Ha ha.
I saw a two guys in a black Ford f 150 stealing an empty security cage for an AC unit. I talked to him and asked him what was going on. As I did this I saw the other guy on in between the houses grinding away the four posts. 10 minutes later 4 police showed up but not in time to arrest them. I did get the license plate number and I did check with the home owner and it was indeed stolen.

Greetings,

There is a housing decorating party at Sarah and Virgil's house this Saturday the 29th. Come out and help get the house looking good for the party. It should be a lot of fun. You'll see your neighbors acting goofy. The decorating starts at 2pm and ends at 6pm

Community move to action - "CHANGE WE CAN CREATE" 7 Minutes ago Karma: 0
Greetings All,
I am a new resident to Historic WEND. I will be residing on Queen St.

I look forward to serving this community and helping in your efforts to revitalize our community. I see that you have already got the ball rolling which shows active involvement yet there is so much still to be done. I have a host of ideas that I would like to share so that we can mobilize a team to initiate the CHANGE WE CAN CREATE NOW.

I am a mother of 5 year old twins that will be attending M. A Jones Elementary this December, so I have a vested interest in seeing this community flourish and grow. I believe that we have to take back control of our village and educate those who do not understand the importance of socioeconomics, culture, and diet.

I would like to broaden the team you have in place by ushering in new volunteers to raise money and necessary tools to accomplish this goal.

We need to give current business facelifts, volunteering our time to paint, clear yards and lots that need to be cut and maintained. vacant properties can be used as gardens and small park areas, we need street teams to reach the youth. We need babysitters, teachers, gardeners, mentors, Spiritual leaders, grandmothers, cooks, students etc. to come together and have the common goal of "Divine Restoration" for this beautiful Neighborhood; with its diversity, convienence and higher education facilites. WE have a Jewel. Our elders and our youth. We need to bridge the gap NOW, before our elders cannot past on the wisdom to the youth so that they may implement it for our present and the immediate future.

My goal is to contribute to this community a home school for children 6 weeks - 5 years until we are blessed with a facility. Family planning education, Midwife & Nutritional support.

I would like to see us begin to move into action by the 1st of the year so that by Spring we too will blossom.

If any of you are interested in joining in on our quest , have ideas, or need help with your mission please contact me.

I look forward to fellowshipping with you in community service soon. "OBAMA"

Hi there. This is Kathleen Jones, Implementation Coordinator for The Kindezi School. In answer to your question about our school facility, our first choice at this point is to rent space from Atlanta Public Schools in the JC Harris building on Lucille Ave. in West End. We will find out at the end of this week whether or not the facility will be available to lease next year (APS currently has another program residing there). I will send an update to the WEND forum once we receive word on the availability of JC Harris. As for West Hunter Street Baptist, it is still potentially an option, but we found out recently that the third floor of the space would need extensive renovations due to code compliance issues.

In the last 10 days I have had 3 houses broken into. The first was on Lowery. It occured at around 10pm. Back door was kicked in. Young lady was home and screamed, burglar left. There was a for rent sign outside so I think that the low life thought it was vacant. The second occured between 7 and 10. Security door was bent in half from the bottom. Crooks went in stole a flat screen. This is the 3 or 4 th time house been burglarized. Second time flat screen has been stolen. Last night at about 5pm my neighbor across the street was broken into. Luckily the alarm went off and they fled. Neighbor said that she heard a car pull up and someone with a yellow cap walk back and forth. She thought it was the owners. Be on the look out for two to three people that are just standing around. Look out for cars or trucks that are circling the neighborhood. Write down license plate numbers. Secure your back doors and windows. We once again have to fend for our safety due to these pathetic sympathic judges that let these low lives out to continue to victimize us. There are a few good judges down there but the worst that I have seen is right at the Jail. Judge Lovett has to go.
One other thing I saw around 7pm was a beautiful 645 BMW parked on Oglethorpe st. It was between Holderness and Grady Pl. It was suspicious because it had its flashers on and the right wheels were in the kudzu. I called 911 and told them about. I could see that the air bag had been deployed. I got my flashlight and could see that the whole gear shifter and dashboard were ripped apart. If any one saw anything give me a call or the police. The white BMW had Florida tags. Either it was dropped off at this location on a flatbed or someone stripped it there. The cop told me that it had been stolen in Dekalb on the 10Th. Someone saw something. I have heard of a couple of other cars havin been stolen from Dekalb and found over here.

If you see anything call 911. Let them figure it out. Also look out for your neighbor. Have their number so you can call them. We are in for a long holiday season. I can be reached at 404 456 4118. I hate a thief so call me any time of day.

Dear West End Resident:

I'm the intown manager for ADT. We are running a special I'd like to share with your neighborhood association. We are currently waiving all equipment, installation and equipment costs for new clients who sign monitoring contracts. In other words, absolutely no costs beyond the monthly monitoring fee.

I attach my one time promotional flier. Please let me know if I can help secure any of your neighbors or if you all would like me to appear at your next neighborhood association to speak about practical security tips.

I would also be willing to donate to the association $50 for each resident who signs up through me. Please mention this posting upon sign up so that I can make the proper donation to the community.

Hi neighbors!

If you drive by our house (1162 Oglethorpe) for the next few days, you'll see many tarps of different colors and sizes arranged across our fence, shrubs and porch railings. We haven't gone tarp crazy, but we do have around 300 tarps that need new homes, and that's where you come in. The tarps range in size from 6x6 to 25x25 monsters. Some are lighter weight, but most are heavy duty and some contractor-grade. They are all brand new, used just the once. They're great for collecting leaves, drop cloths, roof work, working under cars, a million uses. Everyone should keep one folded in their car trunk for emergencies. They also make great holiday gifts. I suggest using a tarp as gift wrap on a box containing a folded tarp - 2 for 1!

Why:
Jessica and I take part in the Breast Cancer 3-Day every year, an event where participants raise funds to fight breast cancer, walk 60 miles in 3 days, and sleep in tents during the event. This year's event was last weekend, and featured several thousand walkers who bought brand new tarps to put under and over their tents to keep the rain out, then abandoned them when the sun came out. Jess and I couldn't take the idea of hundreds of brand new tarps going into dumpsters and landfills and never decomposing, so we collected and folded as many as we could, and now they need homes.

We have 18 contractor-sized trash bags of folded tarps in our basement (around 300 total, I estimate) that are wet with grass clippings, so I'll be putting 20 or so out each day to dry. If you need one, or many, come and get them. If you can use a bunch, give me a call at 404-277-5970 and I'll hook you up with all you can carry.

A couple of requests:
1) These tarps came our way as part of a great charity (The Breast Cancer 3-Day) and I'd like to keep that karma rolling. I don't care how many you take, but if you can afford it, it'd be cool to leave a small donation. If you can't, no problem. Checks should be made out to "Breast Cancer 3-Day", and if you're leaving cash, please put it into an envelope, and drop it into our mailbox. It locks, so your money will be secure.
2) If our cars are in the driveway, knock on the door and say 'Hi!' and maybe help me put out a few more tarps to replace the ones you're taking. :-)

I hope there's enough demand to find homes for all of these. If anyone could suggest a charity that could use them, that'd be great. Feel free to pass this offer on to everyone you know!

Thanks!

We have a winner in our adult Jack-O-Lantern contest!

It was a tough choice.

We had two fantastic, creative entries, both of which showed unique style and panache! Both were scary, as every jack-o-lantern should be.

Even the names of our two jack-o-lantern entries were frightening and appropriate - CyberBorg and Day of the Dead!

We voted by secret ballot, and after the votes were counted, CyberBorg won. This should not be interpreted as a bow to the threats made by CyberBorg; we were not intimidated!! We simply felt that the creators of CyberBorg showed extreme originality and "outside the box" thinking in his/her design features and execution.

Our Day of the Dead pumpkin was obviously a close runner up, and not only because of the limited entries. What a fantastic piece of artwork! We have decided that next year, our Second Annual Halloween Jack-O-Lantern contest will be expanded to include a professional category, because we are convinced that the carver of this pumpkin must be a professional artist or sculptor - and we hope that other artists in the neighborhood will take up the challenge. We would love to see more work with this level of expertise. Sleyja, if you have a website for your artwork, will you share that with everyone? We'd love to see more of it.

As announced earlier today, our children's/youth contest deadline has been changed to 9:00 a.m. Friday, October 31. Please post a photo of your child's jack-o-lantern by then!

Liz and Carl, I'll be bringing your prize to you and look forward to seeing you tomorrow night! I hope everyone else also listened to Elliot's music on his website and will think about joining us tomorrow at Smith's Olde Bar, 1578 Piedmont Avenue, at 8:00 p.m. The Elliot Holden Band opens for Porter Batiste Stolz, and it will be a fun evening with great music!

And you MOST DEFINITELY don't want to miss this year's holiday Indie Craft Experience in their new location on Saturday, November 15th, from 11 - 6! They are still in the West End but in a beautiful photo studio with tons of space not to mention over 100 of the country's most shockingly awesome indie crafters. There will also be live music, refreshments, and a DIY tee shirt printing station. And a bar. With festive drinks. That I will hopefully be working. (Kelly and I fight over this position but this is my year.) This really is a wonderful event that we Atlantans should be proud of - I know I will be so happy to pick up some great gifts all in one brimming-with-love-and-happiness crafty place.

Darek,

Thanks for this post. I too hope a change will occur. That is one of our goals for 2009. With you putting together a website spreadsheet we can use to track the complaints and Ewelina chair the committee maybe we can see a difference here.

Code enforcement needs to start from the basics

1) We need addresses on these homes how can we make a complaint when we dont know the address
2) They need a updated timely list of owner half the time they can not find the owners
3) They need to be able to get stiffer fine for violators. Right now the fines are jokes

It's actually in Capitol View not in West End but whatever..

From the keyboard of that sexy and talented Jack Kinley:

What: B Scared—Art Show and Carnival Extraordinaire!

When: Friday, October 31, 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Where: The B Complex
1272 Murphy Ave, SW
Atlanta, GA 30310

The B Complex—an artist cooperative community in Atlanta's West End—is undergoing a costume change of sorts as it transforms from one of the city's most rustic re-purposed industrial spaces into an old fashioned carnival of sorts this Halloween. Organizers at the co-op have compiled works from over 20 artists which explore traditional day of the dead imagery, various interpretations of modern-day Halloween rituals, as well as explorations of the psychological and emotional aspects of fear.

But don't come to the B Complex expecting "just another art show." And please don't show up in your blazer and turtleneck like your stereotypical art critic—unless of course, that's your costume for the evening. The B Complex throws a wild party and what, if any, is a better excuse to party than Halloween? The 8,000 square foot exhibit space will be bustling with the sounds of DJ Dr. Tim, performances by aerialists Dances in Air, and a very special treat from Atlanta's very own burlesque troupe—Dames Aflame. Resident artists have transformed the two-acre compound with black-lights, fire sculptures, carnival games and spooky surprises around every corner. And for those of you who wait until the last minute to plan your Halloween costumes, custom masquerade masks will be available on site!

A $20 cover ($15 for those in costume) gets you access to all of the evening's entertainment—including an open bar, as long as it lasts!

Yes, as Danielle's response indicated, it appears that the reason we are so "popular" is that our housing prices are at $49 a square foot, way below those in other parts of town.

It reminds me of those unintentionally backhanded compliments like, "You look so good! You've lost a lot of weight!"

I'm looking forward to the day when we're like a certain neighborhood I heard about in Decatur, where people I know had their name put on a waiting list to buy a home, with instructions to their real estate agent to put in an offer on whichever home came up for sale next, SIGHT UNSEEN. Now, that was a popular neighborhood.

D, it was in a WENDChat email from earlier this year. I have attached the body:
That make two dumpster divers in the area. Matt Hinton is also a dumpster diver (matthinton@yahoo. com). He lives next door in Westview. I bought a magnificent five panel door from him. It marked the beginning of my household replacing all it's interior doors with historic ones.

My house was completely bastardized by mortgage fraudsters, they took every damn historic detail out the house except the windows, which are thankfully protected by our historic designation.

With heart of pine framing, any house can be restored if their is a ready supply of antique elements around for cheap. Eweline and Derrick have done a great job at restoring their home. Let's share these successful restoration stories.

Can you share

Mary wrote:
Just wanted to share....today I met a lady that has salvaged a full
1800 square foot basement full of historic houseparts - doors,
mantles, cabinets, windows, tile, etc. - and she said that she got
most of it from the West End, a lot of it from 'dumpster diving.' I
can't believe people think this stuff is trash. I guess people (many
investors at least) renovate and don't take into consideration the
value of their 'vintage' fixtures and opt to replace them for new
instead of trying to restore the amazing stuff they already have. I
found it really sad and hope that we can get more owner/occupants who
don't trash fireplace surrounds, wood carved mantles, oak front doors,
and clawfoot tubs! I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but love
what you have and save it if you can!

Thursday, October 9

6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Fire Station 7

535 Whitehall Street

Atlanta, Georgia 30310

On July 11, 2008 Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin announced she was closing historic Fire Station #7 in the West End, highlighting the inequitable distribution of services in Atlanta's Southwest communities. The Save #7 Coalition was created to organize efforts to reopen the fire station.

City Council Representatives Cleta Winslow (District 4) and Ceasar Mitchell (Post 1 At-Large) joined the Save #7 Coalition and have worked tirelessly to undo the mayor's closing of Fire Station #7. At-Large Council Representative Mary Norwood also joined the Coalition, along with State Senator Vincent Fort, State Representative-Elect Rashad Taylor, and Atlanta Public Schools Representative Khaatim El.

These elected officials, and other members of City Council, understand that public safety must be a high priority. City Council has steadfastly voted in favor of a legislative strategy to protect our families and our property by providing funding for adequate fire safety services - - equivalent to services offered in every other part of the City.

Please join us in celebrating the legislative accomplishments of our City Council on Thursday, October 9 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. We will enjoy music provided by The Elliot Holden Group, and food and beverages provided by Lotus Catering & Bakery and The Grounds Coffeehouse.

Since it's getting colder, we'll be having a last grill-out today--I have the grill, they have the space (it's the yellow house towards Oglethorpe). I believe there will be a small potluck from their friends as well.

Feel free to stop by and say hi to them (and me) this evening after 5.

I'm writing to share my experience as a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shareholder in the Urban Farm run by Creating Vibrant Communities at 779 Atwood Street off Donnelly near Citi Kroger. As the first 13 weeks of my farm share draws to a close I wanted to let everyone else know about this fantastic opportunity to purchase fresh locally grown organic vegetables right here in our own neighborhood.

I had never been a CSA member until the CVC Urban Farm opened earlier this year. I wanted to support this urban agriculture initiative in my neighborhood and purchased a share (half basket each week) for $250 (it would be $400 for a full bushel basket) mainly as a show of support, because I have my own garden. But I have been so impressed and sometimes overwhelmed by the quality and volume of vegetables I receive each week in my basket that I plan to keep up my CSA membership, and plan my own garden planting this fall around what's being planted at the Urban Farm.

Even as a vegetarian, I still often find myself giving away vegetables, because I'm bringing so much home each Sunday from the farm. I've learned to cook new things, and I'm eating healthier than I did before. I don't go to the grocery store nearly as often, rarely drive all the way to the DeKalb Farmers market any more, and when I do grocery shop I don't spend half as much as I did before I joined the CSA.

More important, I feel safe eating the food I bring home from the Urban Farm because I know it's grown organically. I also like the fact that my preferences are taken into consideration when it's time to plant. And if I had time (!!) I could get a hefty discount for a few hours of volunteer service at the farm each week.

If you haven't seen the CVC Urban Farm yet, come by on a Sunday afternoon between 2 and 6 pm when the CSA members are picking up their harvest baskets. Extra produce is often also being sold at that time, and you can tour the exhibition garden beds and farm plots, and visit with the farm goats.

Meanwhile, if you want more information about signing up to become a shareholder, contact Robert Thompson at 404-399-3790 or rlthomp2002@yahoo.com, and check out these pictures of the farm at http://www.beecherdonnelly.com/farm/

Example: these were the vegetables in my basket this past week
Mixed peppers
Bell peppers (2)
Tomatoes, small red (3)
Tomatoes, small green (3)
Cherry tomato (cup)
Okra (small bag)
Green snap beans (small bag)
Mixed salad greens (small bag)
Eggplant (2)
Red peppers (small hand full)
Watermelon (small)
Mixed fresh herbs

I was hoping that is the direction that White St would go. Those warehouses would make great spaces for restaurants and retail. West End just needed someone brave enough to start things on White St. I can easily see White St becoming a destination strip in the near future. West End has a tremendous amount of retail space. White St alone has more retail then a lot of intown neighborhoods. Can you Imagine the Telecom Center at the corner of Lee and White St being redeveloped? 280,000 sqft of retail in just that building alone! It could be an awesome antiques/flea market or mini King Plow type of development next to a Marta Station. Hey, I guess I'm daydreaming a bit, but can't wait for the new restaurant.

I found gas in Mechanicsville - Gas station.. Bp 180 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd SW
Atlanta, GA 30312, September 28 4.00 p.m..

The best way to help ourselves in West End is to ask on gas station what time they will get new fresh supply and post on forum/chat. It can help IMO. Next thing I will move this thread to "Just For Residents" Section so registers users will get notifications.

I have been meaning to give everyone an update as to what is going on with the firehouse. I don't have much time right now but it is rolling along. I believe it is going to take months of fund raising and possibly until a new mayor is seated. It may be sooner if there is a tragedy. I shake my head every time I think of how vulnerable we needlessly have to be.
I would like to acknowledge all of the councilmembers that have seen the necessity for #7 and have voted in overriding the mayor's veto. I would also like everyone to know what two of our councilmembers have done above and beyond voting for the override. I would like to commend both Ceasar Mitchell and Cleta Winslow for the introduction and successful passing of their legislation to reopen our #7. Ceasar Mitchell is a stand up guy. I talked to him early on and he told me that it is unfortunate but because of the budget and the age of the station it has to be closed. He came to a Georgia Stand up meeting and he spoke to the members about the closing and other pressing issues. Through his listening to the concerns of the members he was open minded enough to realize that the way the closing happened, 3 days notice, was not the way things should work. After that meeting Ceasar started drawing up the legislation with the help of his right hand man, Wayne Martin Jr. He not only did this, he also took out of his council budget 13,000 to go toward the funding of the reopening of the station. Cleta Winslow our councilmember and neighbor, like Ceasar, committed 4,387.90 from District 4 budget and an additional 16,934 to go forward an assessment of the repairs and costs for #7. I thank them very much

I would like to tell everyone about what has been going on in respect to crime in the neighborhood. I am pleased to report that for the most part we are fairing really well compared to much of the neighborhoods in the city. I feel that because of our neighbors (75+-)that have joined the off duty police patrol, has made a statement to the police that we want to live without fear of burglaries, robbery , copper theft etc. Seargent Bender, our off duty officer has really done a great job. He is always talking to the other officers, crime suppression unit, narcotics unit and his supervisors about getting road blocks set up, he informs the other officers of our concerns, vacant houses, vagrants, street peddlers etc. Officer Martin is back on our morning beat and what great news that is. He does the same things that Sgt. Bender does for us. Sgt. Bender has been working a number of late night patrols recently because of a few trouble streets we have that have young punks openly selliing drugs. This has lead to the involvement of our crime suppression unit, which is headed by Lt. Leighty. This guy is ex military and he loves to get the bad guys. He has really helped in a few round ups of the undesirables. He appreciates our committment to not tolerating crime in our neighborhood. Lt. Leighty recently had the unit out and he rounded up 9 punks for dealing crack and marijuana. Not all had possession. I appreciate the dedication each of the officers has. I appreciate all the members in our patrol and appreciate all of you who do not hesitate to call 911 when you see something going down or something that just doesn't seem right. Thank you thank you thank you.

Dear Friends,

I'm logging on to the West End Forum for the first time tonight since Nikki passed away on July 9. Thanks to everyone who has expressed sympathy to me here on this website, in person, or by emails, phone calls, or cards. Every contact has meant so much to me.

My home and my life cannot be the same without Nikki, because she was such an important member of my family. But I know time will heal the hole in my heart as it heals all losses. Fortunately (or unfortunately, however you want to look at it) there is plenty to be done in our community in the meantime that takes my mind off my grief.

The closing of our fire station is of great concern to me. While Nikki was ill during the past months, I had two small house fires; one because I was so exhausted that I could hardly stay awake and left her food cooking on the stove unattended, and another in the dryer because I was doing so many loads of laundry to care for her that it overheated and caught on fire. My house was also burglarized one day while we were at the vet's office, and now it will be even harder for me to get out in case of a fire because, in addition to burglar bars on every door and window, the front and back of the house are boarded up with plywood. A few extra minutes of response time might not mean anything to the mayor, but they mean a lot to us living here in the West End.

I missed so much work taking care of Nikki that it's a wonder I didn't lose my job. Ten people on our court were let go last Thursday because of budget cuts. It's expected that during the next year those of us who still have jobs might be furloughed (work without pay) for as much as 30 days of the year. I work for the government, and I work for the courts, an office that I perceive as pretty essential. Still, I believe that NOTHING is more important for our government to do than protect the public safety.

My blood boiled when I heard Mary Norwood say at the city council meeting on August 18, "Closing a fire station is painful, like closing a swimming pool." No, Mary, it's not like closing a swimming pool. When Anne Fauver said she had to vote against funding the reopening of Fire Station 7 because she "couldn't support taking funds from areas needed to run the city" (referring to departments like the city finance department, corrections department, judicial department and law department) I thought I would scream. Ms. Fauver, nothing is needed more to "run our city" than fire and police. And when Natalyn Archibong first said that she wanted to get from the point of saying that the station needed to be opened to actually opening it, I wanted to cheer. But then she followed it up by saying that she was personally troubled by the fact that reopening the fire station meant budget cuts that would result in the loss of cemetery security at Oakland Cemetery. Excuse me, Natalyn, but THOSE PEOPLE ARE ALREADY DEAD! They don't care if we get the money. They would gladly give it to us, I'm sure. They don't need a night watchman, but we do need a fire station to protect our children and families, WHO ARE STILL ALIVE!

Don't these people get it????

I can't go to Tuesday's city council meeting to help convince these city council members to override Mayor Franklin's veto of the legislation funding the reopening of Fire Station 7. I'll risk my job if I miss more work. If any of you can go, please do. There's no question that citizen comments, coming from the heart, make a difference. On August 18 I listened to citizens speak and watched the faces of the city council members as they listened. I saw heads nod and notes being taken. In their discussion later the points made by citizens were often brought up.

Fire Station 7 answered more than 2,640 calls last year. You be the judge. Do we need a fire station here in our neighborhood, or can we wait for fire trucks to come from some other part of the city to answer that many calls?

So here's the deal....our tenant is moving into our house in East Point on Thursday. We've been getting that house ready and everything, and I get a phone call tonight that the person I'd hired to clean the house can't do it tomorrow and can't get there until Saturday. Since she's moving in on Thursday, that won't work! Does anyone know of a good house cleaner that can get an empty, small (2 bed/2 bath approx. 1000 sq. feet) house nice and sparkly without breaking the bank? On a limited time frame? Much thanks!

I dont know if anyone else has been concern with the lack of maintenance on the trail.
As the chair of Beautification, I felt I had to do something. Please see the note from Ed:

Good afternoon Vonda:

Typically we don't maintain projects during construction but I understand everyone is using the White St portion already and it is overgrown.

We hired our maintenance contractor to start servicing this segment in August. If you don't see a dramatic improvement early next month, let me know.

Have a good summer.

I thought some of you all might be interested in checking out this show. We have a friend named Charlie that has a studio over at the Candler Smith Warehouses. He teaches sculpture classes and other various art things, but every year he also builds a large commissioned fire sculpture for Burning Man. This Sunday they are having a Fleeble Flobbler Flapjack Fiesta to help raise funds to get the sculpture to the Nevada desert in a couple months. The show is $10 and they will be providing breakfast – pancakes and bacon! You also get to check out some awesome art and browse Charlie’s studio.

In other words, instead of waiting an hour at Thumbs Up (or your other favorite breakfast joint) on Sunday you can stay close to home and have a tasty breakfast while enjoying some art! Here’s the invite if anybody is interested:

------

Hola Amigos Y Amigas!

Please join us for the Fleeble Flobbler Flapjack Fiesta on Sunday, July 27, from 10am until 3pm! At any price this would be a worthly brunch, but at only $10 per person, it's a deal! What the heck is a Fleeble Flobbler Flapjack Fiesta (FFFF), you ask? Dios Mios! The FFFF is a yummy and fun FUNdraiser for the Fleeble Flobber….. A little background: We have been and continue to be mucho busy building the Fleeble Flobbler, our 2008 art project for Burning Man.

What is a Fleeble Flobbler? Eye yie yie yie!

The Fleeble Flobbler is a 20 ft tall steel vessel serving as a wood burning fire caldron. What makes the Fleeble Flobbler irresistible is that this is no ordinary fire caldron – it's a rotund clown that glows red hot and has eight seats extending from the pivoting basin for riders to bounce around on and make the Fleeble Flobble! You can check out the full description and look at our progress on www.howhowhow.com

The Fleeble Flobbler is our most ambitious project yet and we need your support. As you are no doubt aware, the prices of diesel have leaped far beyond what our wildest imagination was (and, our imagination is pretty wild!) when we dreamed this project up in January.

The Fleeble Flobbler will travel with Charlie in a big truck across the country to the Nevada Desert in August! (www.howhowhow.com)

Okay, back to the invite: We are having a good old fashioned Fleeble Flobbler Flapjack Fiesta complete with flapjacks, bacon and other goodies to help raise some funds to get the Fleeble Flobbler to the desert.

So on July 27, from 10am until 3pm, come out and lend your support while smackin' your lips and checkin' out the Fleeble Flobbler in our art studio! At $10, this is cheap eats and awesome entertainment! And, yes, there are t-shirts and stickers for additional donations so you can memorialize this mucho bueno event with Flobble Schwag!

But, you say, you don't live in Atlanta! How can you participate and support the FFFF or simply the FF?

If you live outside of Atlanta but would still like to make a donation to the cause, click the donation button on the Fleeble Flobbler page of www.howhowhow.com!

No donation is too small! Your $5 will get us one gallon closer to the playa.

Con Muchos Besos!

I have to speak on this. Because so many times we just hear one side of the story. When I started in the morgage business, I tried to educate my clients on the dangers of these types of loans but they did not want to hear it. They want the money or the house period. I even lost a client because I suggested she wait a couple of months for her credit to increase so she would not have to do a sub prime loan. She went with someone who would give her a interest only for three years.

So please dont blame us, the majority of loan officers try to do what is best for the borrower. It is the borrower who decides to take the loan.

I will concede two points
1)not all loan officer try to educate the borrowers when the borrower is making a mistake.
2) These loan should not have been offered. But just like fashion just because they make it in your size dont not mean you should wear it.:-D

See that is really very interesting...I have long said that b/c of several issues (mainly bugs and allergies) I don't do much with my yard; but if anyone wants to plant a little garden bed and just needs a place I would be willing to share some yard. As long as I get a carrot or tomato or two out of it. We lived in Iowa I learned that this type of arrangement (especially when it involves animals) is called a "leased acreage" and actually quite common.

Dani wrote >>>> These articles are fairly interesting. I grew up in the city and god willing plan to continue to live in a city. The suburbs has always been a little scary to me in that all of the houses look the same and that they can build a whole block in like one week. It just doesn't seem natural! Anyway, thanks for the food for thought....I know some of the people in the articles wish they had "thought" more before they moved out there.

I hope you will enjoy those movies as well...

More good news. Just found out that the first litter of kittens I found (different than the most recent litter) have all been successfully adopted out to new homes by the rescue organization. Hopefully this second litter will be just as fortunate.

STRESS = DIS-EASE
Stress has been connected to a host of bodily dis-eases. Just to name a few: Heart Disease, Cancer, Obesity, Diabetes, Chronic Infections, Headaches/Migraines. Stress causes a detrimental cascade of chemicals into the body resulting in decreased immune function, muscular tension and hormonal imbalance. The result over time is “DIS-EASE”. So many of us are suffering from, stress-related dis-ease and discomfort, have begun to think this mental and physical state is normal. We at djali’s Healing Touch and SVI Stress Management have formulated programs to address all types of stress. Just a few of the modalities used include massage therapy, raindrop therapy (with the use of therapeutic gread essential oils), individual consultation, diet therapy, exercise therapy, rhythmic breathing, hydrotherapy and introducing an extraordinary Ayurvedic aromatherapy technique used throughout the ages to counter-act stress and depression. Please check out http://www.myspace.com/djalishealingtouch for more information about the services that we provide.

A gentleman named Chris Nelson custom-built the cage for my AC unit on Oak St. I sent him the dimensions and asked him to build it so it could be opened for service. He did an amazing job and cost half as much as the next closest quote we received. You can reach him at cnfabworks@yahoo.com.

You should have seen some of the quotes we received. One of them wanted to charge $350 for two sticks of rebar with a padlock and chain. It might have worked but only because the copper thief would be caught because he'd be laughing so much at the lame "cage".

Tires! I am so sick of seeing them left on the sidewalk. It cost about $3.00 to get rid of them, so some people think it ok to just dump them.

GOOD NEWS:

Fulton county has a Scrap Tire Amnesty Days May 31-June 28.

The nearest place is Victory Outreach Church, 2175 Metropolitan Parkway, Atlanta (May 31 – June 28)

People now can dispose of up to five (5) tires per household between the hours of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

So I am asking you, no I am begging you to pick at least 5 tires and take them to this location. If you dont know where any tires are, go walk the beltline someone placed about thirty on a vacant property there.

Someone mentioned the importance of having community members taking care of parks. I think creating a Friends of the West End Park would be a great idea. I don't think it exists, does it? Is anyone else interested?

I think it would be nice to do a mini-film festival on the park, coordinate affordable tennis lessons, organize regular clean-ups, work to build a retaining wall to protect the grass/plants from vehicles...I'm going to join the NPU-T's Parks Committee but I'd love to connect w/ others on creating a 'Friends of' group if it doesn't exist & join it if it does exist.

The Rose Circle Community Garden here in the West End is using land owned by a neighbor, with his permission. We cleaned up his kudzu-infested land and several families now are growing food for their families there.

In answer to the question about how gardens can be justified on school grounds when tennis courts and baseball fields aren't found there, please remember that every child must first eat healthy food before s/he can study and learn. Then also try to imagine the exercise and healthy outdoor activity involved in gardening. If you have ever gardened you will also know that it requires many other skills such as reading, math, geometry, logic, problem-solving, planning, and cooperation with others. These are important skills that children need to learn. Tennis and baseball teach many of these things, but so does gardening. Gardening has the added benefit of providing food.

When we were organizing Security Patrol, some people were saying “Kids in our neighborhood need more activities. If these teenagers had more organized activities they would not commit crimes”. Great institutions (Wren’s Nest, Hammonds House and Fly by Theatre) in our neighborhood created “Art Block Summer Camp” but parents with their kids are not interested in the program. Not even one kid signed up for Summer Camp.
Shall we call it West End Paradox?

John and I went to the court watch today. We were successful because the defendant had two years probation revoked. This means he is going back to jail. He is the 3rd top person in Zone three for burgulary.
The prosecutor is going to try to had five more years to his jail time. Because today was not a sentencing it was a probation issue. She is also going to try have have him banned from the area. Let's hope she bans him from Fulton county or him may come here!
